I posted the below comment on Blogging Baby Blog.
The song should be pulled and school officials should go through mandatory sensitivity training. How could someone be so blind to offensive language in a slave song. What was acceptable in the 50’s should no longer be acceptable this century. Many times I don’t agree with issues raised by the NAACP, but this one seems right on. I wish people would wake up and smell the racism.
Our country has a horrific racist past, and what’s it going to take for America to realize that actions like this can be emotionally painful to a large subset of the population.

It’s an increasingly PC world we live in. It’s a little scary that people are so easily offended by things.
I’m from convict stock. My (seventh generation) Grandfather was sent, clamped in irons on the HMAS Glatton in 1802 to botany bay.
Personally If someone wanted to sing convict song at my kids school….I wouldn’t really care!
Just wanted to clarify my comment.
I am in no way condoning racisim (beleive me Australia is guilty of racisim and I hate it in every way) All I am saying is that it seems we live in a hyper sensitive society where even the littlest thing can cause offence.
Granted this is a slave song…..i’m not pretending to know the in’s and out’s of another country’s racial history or your politics and legislation, however whilst i’m sure this man probably had a slave background and this song can be seen as a racial slur….it is a kids concert…….and I think we need to put things into perspective……I don’t think it’s supposed to be a political campaign or an indication of society’s breakdown of human rights and humanities treament of minority groups. It was probably seen by most people as ‘just a catchy song that sounded cute when the kiddies sang it’.
Seems a little extreme to me…..but as I said, I’m not in a minority group and I am halfway around the world in Australia.
Thanks for your comments Chocolate. After a person lives a lifetime of being offended, even something innocent as a children’s school music program can set them off. We all have different histories and experiences that affect how we feel today. Now that time has gone by since my post, I have calmed down, but it still bothers me when a subset of our population never gets anyone to listen to their feelings. This is one of many incidents over here. It seems like I am reading about something like this every week. Sometimes you have to scream to get people to listen….
