The Kindness Project

This weekend the family and I visited a small mom & pop store for some items we needed and while being run up at the cash register, I saw a display of these “Kindness” coins. While waiting for my total, I read the display and was spell-bound. The way it works is that you purchase a coin and register it on the “Kindness Project” website. Each coin has its own unique serial #. Once someone does something kind for or to you, you pass the coin on to them and ask them to add a comment on the website and pass it on to another person.

The shop owner saw me contemplating whether or not I should purchase the coin, so he just gave it to me for free. His kind act is the first entry for this coin. I am looking for volunteers to accept the passing on of this coin and others. Please comment to this post and describe something kind that you recently did and I will send coins to anyone who wants to particpate. I will open the offer for one week and it will end Sunday evening March 12, 2006. Below is a summary from their website of the project:

The Kindness Project aims to prove that you can have an exponential effect on the spread of kindness around the world. It’s simple - when someone does or says something kind, no matter how small, you give them a token. Taking a few seconds to pass on the token empowers you to brighten someone’s day. The tokens are passed from person to person, again and again, turning the world into a kinder place. Can you imagine how you would feel if you received a token yourself?

The beauty of the Kindness Project is that not only do you get to make a difference in someone’s day by giving them a token, but everyone gets to track their token and read about all its adventures. Be a part of the Kindness Project by passing on your own tokens!

Remember, comment and describe your kindness and we will see where this takes us.

Update: Since some may be uncomfortable sending me their mailing address to receive a free coin, please purchase one from the site and leave us the serial# in this post so we can all track them.

“Kindness in giving creates love” I’m way down on my ‘kindness acts’ Used to do 3 a day. Used to tell the story from the old Kung Fu tv show, where he did not want repayment for helping others, so suggested people thank me for favors or kindness by doing two acts of kindness themselves somewhere down the road and request the receipients of that do likewise…don’t know if they ever did, but everyone liked the idea. spread love, spread peace, spread joy…about the only kindness I’ve done lately was to help some people I’ve met online that know even less about html than I do. : > Thank you for this post. Love that coin!

Its leave a comment Monday. I wish I had found a place with a coin like that. Wal Mart doesn’t carry them. AS bad as WAl MArt is supposaed to be I always find its employees to be very kind and nice.
I had a young man be really nice to me at the grocery store. He not only brought out our groceries, his job, but he also stopped and put my walker in the car. He did this two weeks in a row and wouldn’t take money when we offered it to him.

Dr. John,

Sounds like the grocery store clerk is a great candidate to receive a coin. You can purchse one on-line, or I will be happy to send you one next week.

If you purchase one on-line, please come back and leave the serial# so we can all track them.

A couple weeks ago, while purchasing a drink at a convenience store, I bought a couple pre-made sandwiches and gave them to a homeless guy that I see all the time when I’m driving around near my house. It feels like bragging to talk about it. I didn’t even mention it to anyone else. But I wanted to respond to this post because I think the Kindness Project is a great idea. I am going to order some of those coins and do it with my daughter who we have tried to educate about kindness and charity by showing her with our actions. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Izzy, it’s ok to tell your good deeds! What you did was much appreciated by that homeless guy. Most homeless when given, will share their ‘bounty’ with other homeless. Some ’soup kitchens’ will take last nights dinner and serve it for breakfast the next day. The bread is often stale; sandwiches served ‘dry’ (no mustard, mayo or butter). So store-bought sandwiches were a treat for him.

Would be nice to see some more Kindness story’s here!
