Bill Gates: 11 Things you don’t learn in High School

These are wrongly attributed to Bill Gates– The real author is Charles J. Sykes “50 Rules That Kids Won’t Learn in School”

I got this emailed to me and thought it was good so I saved it and sharing with all of you. Presented at Mt. Whitney High School in Visalia, California. Worthwhile reading for anyone. Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! To anyone with kids of any age, or anyone who has ever been a kid, here’s some advice Bill Gates recently dished out at a high school speech about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair-get used to it.

Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule3: You will NOT make $40,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping- they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents’ generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

These rules are not by Bill Gates. They were actually written Charles J. Sykes, author of the book, “Dumbing Down Our Kids”. This is another urban legend. See http://www.snopes.com/language/document/liferule.htm. http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_bill_gates_speech.htm

I think there should be an answer to the 11 things….
For instance… Regarding acquisition of wealth:  In New York City, a study recently found that a black male is as likely to land a job as a white man with a criminal history.  (Recently published in the New York Times).  Also, 2% of the controls the majority of the wealth.  Many of us will never make 40,000 a year.  The American Dream may not be attainable.
I find this e-mail quite condescending in as far as the politically correct statement as well…. Why not just destroy the earth instead?!  If more people were politically correct-minded we would not be in this energy crisis state now.  We knew 20 years ago or more this day would come.

Ditto on the mistaken identity of the person who wrote the rules…see "50 Rules That Kids Won’t Learn in School" by Charles J. Sykes.  Please change your website.

Several of the comments that have been made mistakenly point out that Bill Gates did not write these rules and that you should change your website. They obviously did not read that Bill only used 11 of the 50 things in a presentation at Mt. Whitney High. Kudos to both Sykes and Gates! They both hit a home run (even if it wasn’t Bill’s original idea……).
