My Easter Traditions: Haircuts, Suits and Flowers

One of my fondest memories of my father include our trips to the department store to buy my annual Easter suits.  It was our special time for me to learn, and him to teach me about life. At the time, I didn't appreciate those shopping sprees, but I cherish them now.  Dad taught me about dressing well and being proud of your appearance.  He was a big man and not in the best shape, but he always dressed to the nines and passed this passion to me.  I often wonder what he would think of today's youth and the slacker mentality.  There were many times I saw him shake his head in disbelief after seeing someone with an un-tucked dress shirt. Some of the special things I learned are listed below:

  • Invest in at least one Navy Blue suit from a tailor
  • A man should never be too busy to shine his own shoes
  • Never buy shiny ties from a street vendor (self-explanatory)
  • Never wear short-sleeve shirts to work (He never lived in TX)
  • A new suit requires a haircut

So my weekend will include Bacchus Jr.'s first trip with me to buy him a Easter suit ,a visit to the barbershop and Fresh Tulips for Mommy Bacchus.  Happy Easter everyone and see you next week.

My dad is like this. When I was young I was getting very tall for my age and he would show me examples of women walking in high heels. Some would clomp around and he would show me how unattractive that was. If you’re going to clomp–wear other shoes. If you do wear heels, learn to walk in them.

It really helped me with self-confidence and posture as I grew up. Another of his things was nail biting. I still do that unfortunately!

Thanks for sharing…brought memories to me, too.

Yes, it’s the little things that we remember the most. I didn’t realize problems women had walking in heels until I was in college and someone pointed it out to me. We used to call it “Home Training.”

Thanks for the comment.

wish my sons could read this post..my daddy would always take them and buy them suits and help them pick the right tie(even when they were 4-5 years old..he bought them suits)..and taught them to shine their shoes…he was military and shinned shoes was a must with him…at 62 i can still put a spit shine on a pair of shoes that will blind you..he would take them to church every sunday…he was a Baptist and knew his pagan daughter would never take them so he would…when thom was about 4 he came home from sunday school..got out of the car..took off his suit jacket, his little vest, his tie, his shirt, his pants, his shoes..until he was standing on side walk in his jockeys and socks…declared that he was never going back to them baptists again and went inside..we never could get him to tell us what happened..but he never went back. his brother dave who was 18 months older..shrugged his shoulders and said..he aint going…i aint going..and no matter what daddy did they would never go back…Im sure it had something to do with the little suits..but they are 40 42 now and still wont tell us what happened..ha

but they sure did know how to wear them suits and polish their shoes…thanks to grandpa..

Jackie Sue,
Wow, I’m sorry they went through such a traumatic experience at church. I’m at a point now that I look forward to going to church each week. I won’t put my shoe shinning expertise up against yours, but I do good enough to make my shoes look like a new pair. Thanks for sharing your story.

That’s a great story Ed. I’m glad you are starting your own similar tradition with your son. I hope that you are having a wonderful Easter Weekend. :)

BTW I’m also stopping in to let you know that you’ve been TAGGED! If you do tags check my site for the rules.

Oh, and if you still want to rent from me, my site should go up for rent late Sunday evening or Monday. I’ll make a special price just for you if you still want to be my roomie. :)

[...] There’s nothing like waiting until the last minute to go Easter clothes shopping. Saturday morning Mommy Bacchus (MB) had to run some errands and left Bacchus Jr. (BJ) and me to carryout our Easter Traditions. Since I knew BJ needed some spring clothes, our first stop was the local second-hand store. Sometimes I get lucky and find some really great items, but everything was picked over by the time we got there. We walked out with a few casual items he could wear to school or around the house.
